CryptoLocker Alert- Backup Your Data

We want you to be aware of a new virus called CryptoLocker. CrytoLocker locks your files up and requests payment to unlock them.  Cryptolocker irreversibly destroys your files, so backups are the only recovery option.

What is CryptoLocker? CryptoLocker sends emails to look like communications from the “Payroll Department” or legitimate companies such as UPS, DHS and FedEx. The email has an attachment that is usually a zip file containing a PDF file which, when opened, executes CryptoLocker. If you or someone sees a “countdown clock” then you’ve been infected and it can spread.

 What Can You Do?

  • We are recommending that you take time NOW to backup your computer. Here’s how:
    1. Be at the office.
    2. Ensure you have a wired internet connection.
    3. Right click on the Dynamic Edge Icon in the lower right of your computer and click on Send Status.
    4. Click on Backup – Now.
    5. The Backup will run in the background and will not interfere with your ability to work.
    6. If you do not have a Backup- Now option, please call the Dynamic Edge Help Desk.
  • Ensure you and/or all your employees are aware of the threat and do not open suspicious emails or unexpected attachments- remember, many of the spear‐phishing e‐mails identified to this point have been crafted to look like communications from the “Payroll Department” or from legitimate companies such as UPS, DHS and FedEx.
  • Before opening attachments, verify the identity of the sender.
  • Whenever possible, leave your computer in the office for regular Thursday maintenance and backups.

If you believe your computer has been infected with the CryptoLocker virus:

  • Call us!
  • Do NOT pay the “countdown clock” ransom.
  • Immediately disconnect your system from the wireless or wired network to prevent the virus from damaging more files on the network.
  • Immediately turn off any data synchronization software that automatically synchronizes your data changes with other servers in order to prevent a more widespread infection.

Please call us immediately if you notice anything concerning or if you have any questions.
