Tech Tips and Advice from the Experts at Dynamic Edge

Advantage AI? The Tech That’s Stirring the Pot at Wimbledon

If you thought AI was just for automating spreadsheets or helping your mom finally win at Scrabble, think again. Artificial Intelligence has officially taken center court, literally. For the first time in Wimbledon history, the tournament has gone fully digital, ditching human line judges in favor of AI-powered systems. As an MSP, we’re used to helping clients embrace tech change but even we had to raise an eyebrow at how things played out.

Players Relationship with Hawk-Eye

Meet Hawk-Eye Live, the AI system tasked with calling balls in or out at Wimbledon 2025. It’s fast, it’s accurate (most of the time), and it doesn’t need breaks. Sounds perfect, right? Not quite.

Several players have already voiced their frustration with the system. Taylor Fritz, for example, was left fuming after a controversial call during his match against Karen Khachanov, which some believe cost him crucial momentum. (1) This along with some other questionable AI calls have left players and fans questioning whether this technological ‘advancement’ is truly serving the interests of the game.

The Growing Footprint of AI in Sports

Let’s not rush to judgment and completely dismiss AI integration in the sporting world. AI has been used successfully in other sports.

In Formula E racing, for example, AI is being used to generate real-time audio race commentary for visually impaired fans. (2) Using Google Cloud’s AI, the system provides engaging, accessible coverage that’s both inclusive and innovative.

Over in football (or soccer), Spain’s LaLiga is leading the charge by leveraging AI to analyze player performance, optimize training sessions, and even help referees make better decisions. (3) So far, it’s been a major win, helping teams fine-tune strategies and engage fans in new ways.

When Innovation Meets Implementation

Why is AI nailing it in some arenas and fumbling in others? The key isn’t just in the tech, it’s in how it’s rolled out. In Formula E and LaLiga, AI is used as a supplement to human judgment, not a direct replacement. Wimbledon’s decision to go all-in without a review system or human backup may have been a tad ambitious.

A little advice for both sports and business: pilot first, then scale. Embrace innovation, but always plan for contingencies. AI is a powerful teammate—but not infallible. The use of AI in sports is just beginning, and Wimbledon is a fascinating, if bumpy, chapter. Whether automating IT security, organizing data, or judging a 120-mph serve, technology performs best when it supports people, not replaces them.
