Google recently announced a new system where it will begin rewarding secure websites by giving them higher search rankings.
To implement this, Google has been running tests that take into account if sites are using secure, encrypted connections. Once detected, these sites trigger a signal in the search ranking algorithms and are then ranked accordingly. It is being advised that website developers use hypertext transfer protocol secure (HTTPS) as means for website encryption to secure the data that they send over the web and make their users less vulnerable.
With all the tricks companies use to try to increase their rankings, this new provision is only one factor to increase ranking. Other factors, like quality content, are still paramount in terms of how high your website is listed. Nonetheless, this is a new system to re-evaluate the way site rankings are displayed and could gradually bring a new perspective on how search engine optimization is done.
