3 Reasons Why You Probably Haven’t Gotten Cybersecurity Right for your Business

Getting cybersecurity right takes more than luck

Getting Security Right Takes More Than Luck!

Cybersecurity has been an on-going and pressing issue for quite some time. What’s hard to fathom is that many businesses seem to fall way short on security—including the easy stuff!

Why is it so hard for enterprises to get security right?

  1. You have far too many other things to worry about! New industry regulations. More and more customer needs. Product and service marketing and quality assurance. In my book, that’s a ton of things you and your team needs to stay focused on. Worrying about and keeping up to date with the latest security threats is FAR from what you need to be thinking about. And truthfully, if you or someone on your team is only thinking about cybersecurity part of the time, you have a big snowballing problem!

Cybersecurity takes completely dedicated experts to make sure your networks are safely protected, that proactive measures are taking place and that the growing number of different threats are being vigilantly monitored. Realistically, if you had to think about how to keep your business cyber-secure AND running, you probably aren’t doing either job well enough.

  1. “But it can’t happen to me!”—I’ve heard this one time and time again. That is, until something REALLY bad happens. Cybercriminals don’t just attack big networks like Sony and IBM, they just as easily can trick their way into small networks. Did you know that 1 out of 5 business networks has been hacked?? And that in many cases the business doesn’t even know! It doesn’t matter where you are or what you’re working on, the world has gotten smaller—and cybercriminals can find you!
  2.  Cybersecurity requires everyone’s participation and acceptance—just because you have an IT guy checking your networks doesn’t mean that everything is safe and secure. Your IT team needs to work with and train your team members to understand what good work security is online. While your team members are your biggest asset, they also can be liabilities. If they veer from following your business’ cybersecurity measures—by going to nefarious websites, clicking on questionable links, or having weak and hackable passwords—you leave the doors wide open for cybercriminals to wreak havoc.

A good IT solution will monitor your team’s activities and if members are not corresponding with your security policies, they will bring it up as an issue. The right solution will also try and prevent team members from having opportunities to put your networks at risk.

The Take-Home Message: The real reasons why businesses like yours often fail at implementing and maintaining appropriate cybersecurity measures are the same reasons why IT professionals aren’t investing your retirement savings, giving medical checkups, dental cleanings or cooking you delicious food. The fact is we aren’t that good at any of those things (at least I’m not!). And you’re too busy to learn all there is to know about the best cybersecurity measures for your network.

What we’re good at (and I mean REALLY good) is cybersecurity and business IT.
