Empowering Detroit Youth: The Thompson Foundation & University Prep’s Impact on Education
February 14, 2024
In 1999, Robert and Ellen Thompson established the Thompson Foundation with a mission to uplift low-income families from poverty and foster self-sufficiency. Their passion for urban education led to a transformative partnership with Doug Ross, the founder of University Prep Schools, aiming to elevate educational standards for Detroit youth.
Founded in 2000, University Prep Schools emerged with a vision to improve high school graduation and college enrollment rates for Detroit students. Seeking a financial ally aligned with their mission, Doug Ross approached the Thompsons, resulting in the inception of the “Detroit 90/90 Promise.” This pioneering initiative set a benchmark for success, boasting a remarkable 90-percent graduation rate and a 90-percent college admissions rate, providing a clear path to success for the scholars.
Today, University Prep stands as one of Detroit’s oldest and largest charter school systems, encompassing 10 state-of-the-art schools across three districts, serving nearly 5,000 students in grades K-12. The Thompson Foundation’s unwavering commitment is evident in their leasing of each building to University Prep for a symbolic $1, empowering the schools with additional resources and programs to prepare students for success in life.
The impact of the Thompson Foundation’s generosity is reflected in the vibrant, high-achieving, and college-ready youth who graduate from University Prep Schools, attending some of the nation’s top colleges and universities. The legacy of the Thompsons continues to shape the educational landscape in Detroit, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of countless students.
